The choice that actually matters

Wattage is the number on the box, and it is rarely the number that decides. Over an eight-hour shift what an operator notices is weight, balance, where the cord and hose sit, and whether the steam arrives where the seam is. An iron that is 200 W stronger and 400 g heavier is a worse iron for most benches.

Steam supply

A gravity-feed iron carries its own water and needs no boiler, which makes it the practical answer for a bench in a corner. A boiler-connected iron holds its output all day, which is what a continuous pressing line needs. Most shops end up running both, in different places, for good reasons. Whatever feeds the iron, scale in the water is what shortens its life; see water filtration and scale protection. Where a whole panel is pressed in one closing rather than by hand, the machine is a press, and those have a page of their own.
