Silver Star has built professional garment care equipment since the 1980s, and the SR series is the range Universe Corp stocks for the South African trade. Both models are floor-standing continuous steamers designed for commercial use rather than the light domestic duty most steamers are built for.
Why the trade uses steamers
A steamer relaxes fibres with heat and moisture without ever touching the cloth with a soleplate. That matters on anything with a pile, a print, a delicate weave or a structure you do not want flattened, velvet, sequinned work, lined jackets, anything a customer would be upset to see shine on. On a retail floor it also means a garment can be freshened without leaving the rail. Curtains work the same way, steamed top to bottom where they hang: see steaming curtains.
Certification
Every electrical and electronic component in the SR range carries CE, VDE, UL, CSA and CQC certification. That matters less to the operator than to your insurer and your occupational health and safety file, both of which will eventually ask.
Water
Both machines carry a water shortage alarm that prevents dry running and protects the element. In hard-water areas it is worth pairing the machine with filtration, see water bars and water filters.

- What is the difference between the SR-5000 and the SR-8000?
- The pre-heat stage. The SR-5000 pre-heats at 200 W and the SR-8000 at 800 W, so the SR-8000 reaches working steam faster. Steam output, weight, dimensions and certification are the same on both.
- Can a garment steamer replace an iron?
- For most garments in a retail or valet setting, yes. For a sharp crease on tailoring, no. That needs soleplate contact and pressure. Most professional operations run both.
- Can a garment steamer be used on curtains?
- Yes. Steam relaxes curtain fabric without soleplate contact, so it is safe on velvet, prints and heavy weaves an iron would mark, and a hanging panel is steamed top to bottom where it hangs.
