A tumble dryer is the machine most likely to become a laundry's bottleneck, and usually the one least thought about when the line was specified.
Drying starts at the washer
Every percentage point of water the washer removes mechanically is water the dryer does not have to boil off. A 400G softmount extractor can cut drying time substantially against a 100G hardmount on the same load. If your line is queuing, look at extraction speed before you look at dryer capacity.
Air matters more than heat
A dryer moves a great deal of air, and it can only exhaust what it can draw in. Long duct runs, crushed flexible ducting, blocked lint filters and sealed plant rooms all show up as the same symptom: cycles that overrun their rating. It is worth having somebody look at the installation before assuming the machine is at fault.
Coin and cashless dryers
The dryers on this page are Speed Queen. The LDEE5 single-pocket dryer takes timer, coin or LaundryConnect cashless operation, and the Classic Line SU030 is available with coin control. Both are the dryers specified for self-service laundromats.
Lint
Filters cleaned every shift, ducting inspected on a schedule. This is the least interesting paragraph on this page and the one most likely to matter.

What to settle before you choose
- Heating method
- Electric is simplest to install and the most expensive to run. Gas is cheaper per kilogram where you have a reticulated supply or can site bulk LPG. Steam only makes sense where a boiler is already earning its keep.
- Capacity matching
- A dryer should clear the washer's load in the time the washer takes to run the next one. Undersize it and the whole line waits.
- Extraction and make-up air
- A dryer is a fan. It has to be able to pull air in as freely as it pushes it out, and a sealed plant room is the usual reason a dryer underperforms.
- Lint management
- Daily filter discipline is what separates a dryer that lasts a decade from one that becomes a fire report.

Answers before you enquire
- Gas or electric?
- Gas is materially cheaper to run at volume and worth the installation cost if you are drying all day. Electric suits lower volumes and sites where a gas supply is impractical.
- Why is my dryer slower than its rating?
- Almost always air, not heat. Blocked lint filters, an undersized duct, a long or crushed run, or a plant room with nowhere for make-up air to come from.
