Self-service laundromats

An unattended machine is a different specification from a staffed one. It has to survive misuse, take payment reliably, and be serviceable without shutting the shop.

Universe Corp supplies and installs self-service laundry equipment across South Africa. If you are still at the planning stage, the guide to starting a laundry business in South Africa covers costs, models and the load shedding question; this page covers the machines.

The washers

The Speed Queen SC Series is the hardmount washer-extractor most South African laundromats run: a welded steel A-frame, Quantum Gold controls, 9 to 36 kg. Where the floor cannot be anchored, the SY Series is the softmount equivalent with a 400G extraction speed, which shortens the dryer's work. For a small site or a hostel, the SWNMN2 top-loader takes timer and cashless vend; it is described on the Speed Queen brand page. The wider range of industrial washing machines includes Girbau for operators who want a second make on the floor.

The dryers

The Speed Queen LDEE5 is the single-pocket commercial dryer built for vended sites, supplied with timer, coin or LaundryConnect cashless control. The Classic Line SU030 is the 14 kg industrial dryer with coin control, for a shop that dries at volume. The SSE917 stacked washer-dryer puts both machines on one footprint and is listed on the Speed Queen brand page. Sizing rules for the pair are on the industrial tumble dryers page.

Paying the machine

Coin, card or app is settled before installation, not after. LaundryConnect runs SnapScan, Zapper and MiFare card, alongside or instead of coin, and can be retrofitted to coin machines already on the floor. The trade-offs between the two, and why most new sites run both, are set out in the payment section of the guide.

Keeping the doors open

An unattended machine is loaded by people who did not read the instructions and serviced by whoever answers the phone. Spare parts for the Speed Queen range are held in Wynberg, and installation, commissioning and service are described under services and support.

What decides it

The constraints that matter here

  • Coin, card or app

Coin mechanisms need no connectivity and suit sites where cash is still what customers carry. LaundryConnect takes SnapScan, Zapper and MiFare card alongside or instead of coin. Most new South African sites run a hybrid: coin as the fallback, card or app as the main channel.

  • How many machines

Roughly one dryer for every two washers, and size the pair together rather than buying the washer first. A washer that outruns the dryer behind it queues the whole shop.

  • Built for unattended use

A laundromat machine is loaded by people who did not read the instructions. Robustness and simple controls are worth more here than programme flexibility.

  • Payment is a decision, not a detail

Coin, card and app-based systems each carry their own cash handling, reconciliation and failure modes. Many operators run a hybrid, and it is worth deciding before installation rather than retrofitting.

  • Power and water are the site risk

Load shedding and municipal water pressure decide whether a site trades. Both belong in the site assessment, not in the first month's surprises.

  • Serviceability keeps the doors open

A shop with one machine down is trading; a shop waiting on an imported part is not.

Answers

Before you ask

Which machines suit a laundromat?
Speed Queen is what most South African laundromat operators run, because it is built for unattended commercial duty rather than adapted to it. The SC Series washer-extractor and the LDEE5 dryer are the usual pair; the SWNMN2 top-loader and the SSE917 stacked washer-dryer suit smaller floors.
Which coin-operated washing machines and dryers do you supply?
The LDEE5 dryer runs on timer, coin or cashless control; the Classic Line SU030 dryer is available with coin control; the SWNMN2 top-load washer takes timer and cashless vend. Every Speed Queen machine here can be specified for unattended payment.
Can laundromat machines take card or app payment instead of coins?
Yes. LaundryConnect accepts SnapScan, Zapper and MiFare contactless card, fitted to new machines or retrofitted to coin-operated ones. It can replace the coin mechanism or sit alongside it.
What laundry machines does a small business need to start?
A washer-extractor and a dryer sized as a pair, at roughly two washers to a dryer as the site grows. Front-load commercial washers with high extraction cut drying time and electricity. The laundry business guide works through the count against daily volume.
Do you supply laundromat machines outside Johannesburg?
Yes. Unicorp supplies and installs across South Africa and quotes into Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi and Angola. Spare parts are held in Wynberg, Johannesburg.
Do you help plan a new site?
Yes. Site assessment, utility requirements, machine mix and layout. The guide to starting a laundry business in South Africa covers costs, registration and the load shedding question if you are still at the costing stage.
