Industrial steam boilers and steam generators

Industrial steam boilers supply pressurised steam to commercial laundry plants, dry cleaning operations, hotel and hospital laundries and garment factories. Unicorp distributes Reverberi, an Italian manufacturer with more than fifty years in steam technology.

Every machine that draws steam, and how many of them run at the same time. That is what a boiler is sized from.

Reverberi has manufactured professional steam equipment in Italy since 1973, covering boilers, irons and ironing systems for industrial and medical applications. Unicorp distributes the industrial range in Southern Africa.

Two other makers' steam plant is catalogued elsewhere on the site and listed here as well. Rotondi's steam generators and irons are a range of their own, and Silter's compact boilers, sized for one or two irons, sit under semi-industrial boilers and ironing boards.

Sizing

The most common and most expensive mistake in a laundry is a boiler sized from the number of machines rather than their steam demand. Undersize it and every station on the line underperforms in a way that looks like a fault on each individual machine. Oversize it and you pay for capacity, standing losses and fuel indefinitely. The calculation is not difficult, but it has to be done from the station list.

Water treatment

Scale is the single largest cause of boiler failure, and hard feedwater will destroy an expensive machine quietly over a couple of years. Treatment belongs in the original specification, not in a maintenance budget later. Point-of-entry descalers and filters are under water filtration and scale protection.

Service

Steam plant is the part of a laundry with the shortest tolerance for neglect and the highest consequence when it fails. Preventive maintenance is worth having scheduled rather than remembered.

Boiler-type irons and compact generators sized for one or two stations, from Silter, Reverberi, Silver Star and Rotondi, have a page of their own: steam generator irons.

What this covers

Specifying a boiler

Calculate demand first
Every station that draws steam, at the rate it draws it, with an allowance for simultaneity. A boiler sized off machine count alone is usually wrong in both directions.
Gas or electric
Gas costs less per kilogram of steam at volume. Electric is simpler to install and easier to site. Both are available across the Reverberi range.
Water treatment
Scale is what kills a boiler. Feedwater treatment is not an accessory, it is part of the specification.
Load shedding
A plant that loses steam pressure loses the shift, not the hour. Worth designing for before it happens rather than after.

Ranges

Catalogued as a range

Some makers are listed by machine family rather than model. Each range page covers the family and what to specify.

Rotondi steam generators and industrial irons
The power source for everything else on the floor. Industrial generators for multi-station supply, plus gravity-feed irons and compact steam systems for smaller operations.
Questions

Answers before you enquire

How do I know what size boiler I need?
From the steam demand of every station it feeds, with an allowance for how many run at once. Send us the list of machines and we will do the calculation.
Can I add a station to my existing boiler?
Sometimes. It depends on the headroom in the current sizing, which is a calculation rather than a guess. Ask before you buy the machine, not after.
Gas or electric?
Gas costs less per kilogram of steam at volume and suits a plant that runs all day. Electric is simpler to install and easier to site, and suits a smaller or intermittent load. The Reverberi range is available both ways.
What does the kg/h figure mean?
Kilograms of steam produced per hour. Every press, finisher and iron on the line draws steam at its own rate, and the boiler's kg/h has to cover the stations that run at the same time, not the ones that exist.
Do I need a boiler or a compact steam generator?
One or two irons on a bench run well off a compact generator with no plant room. Past the third station a central boiler usually costs less to run. The compact units are on the steam generator irons page.
