Sizing is a line, not a machine
The most common mistake is buying a washer that outruns the dryer behind it. A 400G softmount machine leaves linen substantially drier than a 100G hardmount, and that difference shows up as dryer time, electricity and floor space rather than as anything on the washer's own spec sheet. Size the pair together.
Speed Queen
American-built, and the range most South African operators know. The SC Series is a hardmount machine on a welded steel A-frame with Quantum Gold controls; the SY Series is the softmount equivalent, requiring no floor anchoring and running an inverter drive. Barrier washers, and what RABC asks for
A barrier washer-extractor — a pass-through machine — has two independent doors on opposite sides of the drum. Soiled linen goes in through the dirty side, and processed linen comes out through the clean side in a separate room. Staff never cross zones, which closes the route by which laundry carries infection back into a ward.
That physical separation is what RABC asks for. Risk Analysis and Biocontamination Control, the standard set out in EN 14065, requires documented control of biocontamination through the laundry process, and a barrier machine is the equipment on which the rest of that documentation stands. It applies wherever cross-contamination has to be demonstrably controlled rather than assumed: hospitals and day clinics, frail care, pharmaceutical and food-processing workwear.

How the ranges differ
- Hardmount machines
- Bolted to a reinforced floor. Lower capital cost, and the right answer where the slab can take it. Up to 200G extraction.
- Softmount machines
- Suspended, so they need no floor anchoring and can go upstairs or into a converted space. Up to 400G, which pulls out substantially more water before the dryer sees it.
- Barrier washers
- Loaded one side, unloaded the other, so clean linen never crosses the dirty side. Healthcare and any operation working to a hygiene certification.
- Sizing the line
- The dryer, not the washer, is usually what limits throughput. Extraction speed is what changes that.

- What is OPL, and is that what I need?
- On-premise laundry: you process your own linen on your own site rather than sending it out. Hotels, lodges, hospitals and mining camps typically reach the volume where it pays.
- Hardmount or softmount?
- Hardmount if you have a ground-floor slab that can be reinforced and want the lower capital cost. Softmount if you cannot anchor to the floor, or you want 400G extraction to cut drying time.
- What is a barrier washer, and do I need one?
- A washer-extractor with two doors on opposite sides of the drum: soiled linen is loaded in the contaminated zone and clean linen comes out in a separate one, so the two never cross. You need one where hygiene is regulated — hospitals, clinics, frail care, food-processing workwear, correctional services. It is also the equipment prerequisite for an RABC-compliant laundry under EN 14065.
