Steam presses and extraction units

Presses for the work an iron does slowly, and extraction for the steam they release. Reverberi's universal press with pneumatic lowering, Silver Star's compact collar and cuff press, Rotondi's trouser and jacket pressing machines, and MORO extraction towers that clear a pressing room of steam and fumes. What the trade calls an iron press, a steam press or a press ironing machine is the same class of equipment, and it is all here.

Design extraction in, not on

Tell us the room, the number of pressing stations and what else vents into the same space. Retrofitting extraction costs considerably more than including it.

We reply within one business day.

Two kinds of machine share this page: the presses themselves, and the extraction that makes a room full of them workable.

Presses

A press does in one closing what an iron does in several passes, and it does it the same way every time. Reverberi's M5500 universal press lowers its upper board pneumatically from a foot pedal and has its own vacuum aspirator; the M5500/1 adds a safety feature for the operator. Silver Star's Mini Press is the compact collar and cuff press that sits beside a shirt line for the two details a customer inspects first. Rotondi's trouser topping and leg presses and its jacket underpressing and offpressing machines are catalogued as ranges and are listed on this page as well.

Iron press, steam press, press ironing machine

Buyers arrive at this page under three names. An iron press and a steam press are the same machine: a heated upper board closing onto a garment on a padded buck, steam through the plate, vacuum through the buck. A press ironing machine is the generic term the catalogues use. The Reverberi M5500 is the universal version, the Silver Star Mini Press the compact collar and cuff version, and Rotondi's trouser and jacket machines the dedicated versions. Shirts at volume are a different machine again, a shirt finisher. Every press here draws steam, so the boiler is sized with the press counted as a station.

Extraction

MORO S.r.l. is an Italian manufacturer of industrial ventilation and extraction equipment, and Unicorp supplies its MGV series extraction towers into dry cleaning and garment finishing operations across Southern Africa.

Two different vacuums

A press has a vacuum that pulls steam down through the garment and the buck. That is part of the pressing process and it does not clear the room. Extraction is the separate job of removing the steam, heat and vapour that escape into the working area, and a busy pressing room without it becomes unpleasant within an hour of opening and unworkable by mid-morning.

Where it matters most

Rooms with several pressing stations, rooms with no natural cross-ventilation, and any space where solvent vapour is present. In a plant with a solvent machine, extraction is not a comfort question.

Specifying

Room volume, number of stations, what else vents into the same space and where the discharge can go. Those four answers size a tower.

What this covers

What sits here

Universal presses
Reverberi M5500 and M5500/1 PPU. The upper board is lowered pneumatically from a foot pedal, the vacuum aspirator is built in, and steam comes from an external connection.
Collar and cuff presses
The Silver Star Mini Press, a compact press for collar, cuff and detail finishing beside a shirt line.
Trouser and jacket presses
Rotondi's topping, leg, underpressing and offpressing machines, catalogued as ranges and listed below.
Steam press, iron press, pressing machine
Three names for one machine: a heated upper board closes onto a garment laid on a padded buck, with steam through the plate and vacuum through the buck. "Iron press" is trade shorthand, "press ironing machine" the generic catalogue name.
Steam press ventilation
MORO extraction towers clearing the steam a press releases, so the operator is working in air rather than fog.
Fume exhaust and chimney draft
Removing solvent and chemical vapour from the working area, and driving the draft where natural stack effect is not enough.

Ranges

Catalogued as a range

Some makers are listed by machine family rather than model. Each range page covers the family and what to specify.

Rotondi jacket pressing machines
Underpressing and offpressing for lapels, shoulders and body shaping, from semi-automatic presses up to automated carousels for production volume.
Rotondi trouser and jeans pressing machines
Topping and leg pressing for formal trousers, jeans and casual wear, with adjustment for different fabric weights and production volumes.
Questions

Answers before you enquire

Why do I need extraction if my presses have their own vacuum?
A press vacuum pulls steam through the garment. It does not clear what escapes into the room. Those are two different jobs and both are needed in a busy pressing area.
Does a press need its own steam supply?
Yes. The Reverberi M5500 takes an external steam connection and has no generator of its own, so it is sized into the boiler like any other station on the line. Count it when the boiler is specified.
Is an iron press the same as a steam press?
Yes. Both names describe a press with a heated upper board, steam through the plate and vacuum through the buck. Press ironing machine is the generic catalogue term for the same thing. The distinction that matters is between a universal press, a collar and cuff press and a dedicated trouser or jacket press, and all three kinds are on this page.
What does a press do that an iron cannot?
Finish a whole panel in one closing, at the same pressure and for the same time every cycle, with nothing depending on the operator's arm. An iron does the same work in several passes and the result varies with who is holding it.
Which press is right for shirts?
For collars and cuffs, the Silver Star Mini Press beside the shirt line. For the body, sleeves and yoke at volume, a shirt finisher rather than a flat press; those are listed on the shirt finishers page.
Do you supply a small steam press for a tailor or alterations shop?
The Silver Star Mini Press is the compact option for detail work. The Reverberi M5500 universal press is the step up, foot-pedal operated with its own vacuum, and it needs an external steam connection.
Is this an occupational health requirement?
Ventilation obligations in a solvent environment are a matter for your own OHS assessment. What we can say is that extraction is routinely what makes a pressing room workable and what an inspector asks about.
