A hanging scale at the counter weighs the customer's bundle, and a scale at the loading point weighs the load. A washer loaded by weight runs the cycle it was sized for; loaded by eye it is under- or over-loaded most of the time. The industrial washing machines are rated in kilograms for exactly this reason.
