A spotting board has two guns, steam and air, and each is fed through a valve that must shut off completely the moment the lever is released. A valve that weeps leaves a wet patch on the board and a spotting agent that will not flush. United Brass Works of North Carolina makes the two valves, and Universe Corp supplies them from Wynberg, Johannesburg.
Two valves
The 4050 is the wet steam valve, with a 3/32 inch orifice, and mounts on a 4060T gasket that is ordered separately. The 4180 is the dry air valve, with an 11/64 inch orifice. Both are rated 125 WSP at 350°F. Each is a packed- stem valve whose nineteen parts are numbered on its spec sheet under Documents, so a packing or a stem can be quoted on its own.

- Which valve is which?
- The 4050 is the steam valve, with the small 3/32 inch orifice that gives a wet steam jet. The 4180 is the air valve, with the larger 11/64 inch orifice for dry air. A spotting board carries one of each, under the steam gun and the air gun.
- Can the valve be repaired rather than replaced?
- Yes. Both valves are packed-stem valves and the packings, spring, stem and disc assembly and seat are all numbered on the spec sheet. A valve that weeps at the stem usually needs the packing, not the valve.
