The vacuum valve on a garment press opens the buck to the vacuum line. It pulls the garment flat onto the bed and draws the moisture out after the steam, which is what leaves the piece dry and set rather than damp. When it fails the buck stops holding, and the operator compensates with more steam and more time. United Brass Works of North Carolina makes the replacements and Universe Corp supplies them from Wynberg, Johannesburg.

Manual and pneumatic

The V160 and X175 are manual valves, opened by the pedal and closed by a spring; the V160 fits the Hoffman V and F series and the American, Butler, Goldman, Martin and New Yorker presses built like them, and the X175 fits the Hoffman X and R series. The VC162 and VC200 are pneumatic, in 1¼ inch and 2 inch sizes, and need 80 psi of air: those go on air-operated Forenta, Ajax, New Yorker and Unipress presses. The selection chart lists them by press model.

Steam vacuum and oil check

Hoffman X and R presses also carry an X150 steam vacuum valve and an X100 oil check, which the chart names alongside the air valve. Those are on the Hoffman press parts page with the pedals and linkage.

Ordering

Give us the press make and model, or a photograph of the plate and the valve. The material lists under Documents number every part, so a spring or a seat can be quoted without replacing the valve.

Questions

Answers before you enquire

Manual or pneumatic?
A manual vacuum valve is opened by the press pedal and closed by its spring; the V160 and X175 are the two patterns. A pneumatic valve is opened by the press's air circuit and needs 80 psi of air; the VC162 and VC200 are those. Air-operated Forenta, Ajax, New Yorker and Unipress presses take the pneumatic valve.
The buck will not hold the garment. Is it the valve?
Often. A vacuum valve that has stopped sealing lets the vacuum bleed, so the garment lifts and the buck stays wet. Check the vacuum motor and the hose first, then the valve. Send us the press model and we will match the valve.
