Hoffman built the R, V and X presses in numbers, and a great many are still working in South African dry cleaners and laundries. What wears on them is not the frame but the linkage: pedals, rods, clevises, torsion and pedal springs, bushings and the pipe support. United Brass Works of North Carolina makes those parts, and Universe Corp supplies them from Wynberg, Johannesburg.
By press
The Model R parts are the two pedals, the buck valve rod arm and arm, the torsion spring, the two clevises and the pipe support. The Model V parts cover the buck valve linkage, the lever system and the foot pedals, and the drawing under Documents shows where each sits. The Model X has the fullest list: four pedals, the pedal rod, the clevises, the pipe support and the counterbalance springs, which are X90 or X95 by press model and head casting.
Valves
The head, buck and vacuum valves on the same presses are on their own pages: head valves and buck valves, with the vacuum valves, X150 steam vacuum valve and X100 oil check listed by press on the selection chart.
Ordering
The plate on the press gives the model, and the part number on the drawing gives the rest. A photograph of the worn part beside the drawing settles any doubt.

Answers before you enquire
- The press is fifty years old. Are parts still made?
- Yes. United Brass Works has made Hoffman replacement parts continuously, and the R, V and X presses are still common on South African floors. The Ajax RA111 valve kit even comes in a pre-1969 version. Send us the press plate and a photograph of the worn part.
- Which spring does my Model X take?
- The counterbalance spring is X90 or X95 depending on the press model and whether the head is aluminium or cast iron. The Model X front view drawing under Documents carries the chart. Give us the model number off the plate and we will read it for you.
