The head valve admits steam to the top plate of a garment press. It is worked by the press linkage, so when it wears the symptom is at the head: steam that leaks with the pedal released, or a head that will not steam at all. United Brass Works of Randleman, North Carolina has made these valves since the presses were new, and Universe Corp holds the common ones in Wynberg, Johannesburg.
Three families
The R121 series fits most Hoffman R-series presses and the American, Goldman, Martin, New Yorker and Unipress machines built on the same pattern. The A, AB, AC and ANY variants add a bushing, and which one you need depends on the press model, not on preference. The X121 and X141 series fit the Hoffman X and V presses. The 7000 series is pneumatic, for Forenta and Pantex presses. The RA111 is the Ajax valve, supplied as a kit with its own gaskets and guides, in a current-model version and a pre-1969 version.
Gaskets
A head valve is installed on a V120T PTFE gasket, which is not in the box. Order it with the valve; a valve seated on the old gasket is the usual reason a new head valve still leaks. Buck valves take the V128T, and the buck valves page covers those.
Identifying yours
The selection chart lists the head valve for every Hoffman, Forenta, Unipress, Ajax, American, Butler, Goldman, Martin, New Yorker and Pantex model UBW supports. If the press is not on it, photograph the valve in place and the press plate and send both with the enquiry. Each spec sheet under Documents carries the material list, so a single worn part can be quoted on its own number.

Answers before you enquire
- Is the gasket included with the head valve?
- No. Every head valve except the RA111 installs with a V120T PTFE gasket, which is ordered separately. The RA111 comes as a kit with its own gaskets and guides. Tell us the press and we quote the valve and the gasket together.
- Which head valve fits my press?
- Read it off the selection chart on the multi-brand spare parts page, which lists Hoffman, Forenta, Unipress, Ajax, American, Butler, Goldman, Martin, New Yorker and Pantex presses by model. If your press is not on it, send us a photograph of the valve in place and the press plate.
- Is a head valve the same as a solenoid valve?
- No. These are mechanical steam valves operated by the press linkage or, on the 7000 series, by air. The electrically operated solenoid valves for boilers, irons and finishers are on the solenoid valves page.
