The buck valve admits steam to the padded lower bed of a garment press, and on a manual press it is opened by the buck pedal. It takes the most cycles of any valve on the machine, so it is the one that wears first: the buck steams with the pedal up, or the pedal goes down and nothing comes. United Brass Works of North Carolina makes the replacements, and Universe Corp holds the common patterns in Wynberg, Johannesburg.

Short and long

Five models cover the presses in service here. The V125 and V125F are short valves for Hoffman V-series and Forenta presses. The V131 is the long valve for the Hoffman F series. The X180 and X185 are the short and long valves for Hoffman R and X presses, and the X185 also fits American, Goldman, Martin and New Yorker machines. The pattern is set by the press, and the selection chart gives it by model.

Gaskets and pedals

Every buck valve installs on a V128T PTFE gasket, sold separately, so order it with the valve. If the pedal, rod, clevis or spring behind the valve is what has worn, those are on the Hoffman press parts page. The head valves for the top plate are a separate page.

Ordering

Give us the press make and model, or a photograph of the plate and of the valve in place. The material list on each spec sheet under Documents numbers every stem, spring, disc and packing, so a single part can be quoted on its own.

Questions

Answers before you enquire

Short or long?
The pattern is set by the press, not by choice. Hoffman V-series and most Forenta presses take the short V125 or V125F; the Hoffman F and X series take the long V131 or X185; the X180 is the short valve for Hoffman R and X presses. The selection chart on the multi-brand spare parts page lists each model.
Is the gasket included with the buck valve?
No. Buck valves install on a V128T PTFE gasket, ordered separately. A new valve seated on the old gasket is the commonest reason it still leaks, so order the two together.
